A Monday night in Doncaster saw us doing a very different kind of Kick, we had been invited to the Keepmoat Stadium to be ball sponsors at a charity game between The Three Horseshoes and a Doncaster Rovers XI.
Not very exciting at first glance it seemed but in the Three Horseshoes side was one fifth of the country’s biggest boy band, One Direction! Louis Tomlinson played for the pub team before he became famous and arranged the game at his local club to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, who we have worked with on many occasions on our visits to South Yorkshire.
We asked the staff at Bluebell Wood to nominate a couple of families to join us on the evening and they put forward Jodie and Jacob, who both attend the hospice. As soon as we parked at the stadium we heard the screams from the huge crowds waiting for the team coach to arrive, this was just a taster of things to come!
After parking up we made our way to the hospitality entrance and were escorted to the Director’s Lounge, which was to be our base for the evening. We were soon joined by Jodie, Jacob and their families, as well as Diane and Catherine from Bluebell Wood. Jodie’s sister, Sydney, is a huge One Direction fan and was beyond excited when we told her that Louis would be joining us in the lounge after the game for a meet and greet session. Not only that but she and Jacob’s brother, Sam, would be going out onto the pitch to present the captains and referee Mark Halsey with the matchball.
Before taking our seats in the Director’s Box we were treated to the biggest burger you have ever seen! The game was won 2-1 by the Three Horseshoes team, which was pretty impressive considering the Rovers XI included the likes of Robbie Fowler, Mark Wright, Dion Dublin, Dean Windass, Michael Thomas and Paul Walsh as well as current Doncaster manager Dean Saunders. Although I think they may have been put off by the screaming every time Louis got anywhere near the ball, or touched his hair, well actually probably every time he breathed.
After what must have seemed like forever for Sydney, Louis joined us in the lounge for photos and he spent at least half an hour chatting and signing anything people were putting in front of him!
We would like to thank Danny Ireland at Doncaster Rovers for giving us this fantastic opportunity and our friends at Bluebell Wood for nominating two very deserving families to come along.
