After Peterborough United held West Brom to a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns, we decided to organise some mascot packages at the replay, held less than two weeks later. We booked two places and offered them to Peterborough Deaf Football, who nominated Joseph, 12, and Ava, 11, to take the places.
Both children brought their families and, after changing into their new football kits, we all set off downstairs to the dressing room, for the first important job of meeting the team. Ava and Joseph chatted to the players, asking them for their autographs while their families were on photo duty. Next on the agenda was a tour of the football ground, including a rare opportunity to take a look into the mobile studio used by Gary Lineker as he hosted the BBC live coverage of the game. The stadium was a hive of activity as the BBC were preparing everything to the finest detail ahead of the start of Match of the Day…it was certainly interesting to see.
After the tour Joseph and Ava went onto the pitch to begin the coaching session with Simon, mascot coordinator, and they were joined by the other three mascots, Frankie, Jesse and Bailey, who are the sons of Posh Assistant Manager, Grant McCann. All five enjoyed warming up, especially when they got the chance to take a penalty in front of thousands of fans in the London Road End. They then completed the evening’s events by leading the team out ahead of kickoff and joining in with the fair play handshake with West Brom.
Many thanks to Andy Palmer from Peterborough Deaf Football for choosing Ava and Joseph, and all at Posh for looking after them both so well.
