Lucas’ Kick – MK Dons v Peterborough United

This was Free Kicks’ fourth visit to Stadium:MK and 6 year old Lucas from Newport Pagnell was the lucky lad to be a tv star for the night, as the game was shown live on Sky Sports.

Lucas was nominated to us by Arwen Smith, whose son Bradley we took to see a game between the same two sides back in 2008 .  Lucas came along to be mascot for the evening with Mum Melanie and Dad Rob, as well as other members of his close family.

Melanie told us “Lucas was diagnosed in 2010 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. 6 weeks into the start of his treatment we were told that he is classed as ‘high risk’. He then moved onto a more intense programme of chemotherapy which is expected to last at least 3 years. His treatment affects his immune system and he has had to have an operation to install a Hickman line into his chest wall. This line is used to take blood transfusions and chemotherapy. He also has regular injections, lumbar punctures and blood transfusions as part of his treatment. Due to his treatment and hickman line he has missed quite a lot of school and he can no longer swim or play football for his local team (Newport Pagnell Town). Lucas remains upbeat despite missing out on most things he used to enjoy and he makes the most of what he can do.  He completes his school work at home and has discovered new hobbies including DS games and building Lego. Lucas has inspired others to fundraise and to date his just giving page has raised over £5,000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research ”

After receiving his new kit Lucas went down to the dressing room to meet Dons’ manager Karl Robinson and the rest of the team, where he got signatures and pictures with the players.

Then it was time for a kick-about on the pitch with the other mascots before going back into the tunnel and walking out in front of 10,000 people and many more thousands watching on tv, with his favourite player, and eventual Man of the Match goalkeeper, David Martin.

Lucas then took his seat in the stand as the Dons scored a second half goal to beat The Posh 1-0.

After the game I received a text from Melanie saying that Lucas “had the most wonderful time” and she had never seen him so excited.
