A chance to appear live on Sky Sports was part of the treat for our two mascots at the Peterborough United v Blackburn Rovers game.
Brothers Paul and Daniel were nominated by our friends at Sue Ryder Care, Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. The boys sadly lost their dad Mark in 2011. Below mum, Claire, tells us more:
“Paul and Daniel are thrilled to be supporting POSH today as mascots. They were chosen by counsellors representing the Sue Ryder charity who had provided help for the boys after their dad, Mark Reynolds, passed away just over a year ago. It has been a difficult time for us all, but the bereavement support we have received from Cruse and Sue Ryder has helped us enormously. As members of the ‘Charlie Chimp Club’, Paul and Daniel were able to meet with other children close to their ages who had also experienced the loss of a loved one. I was also able to share my grief and gain support from the parents, who were in a similar position to me. We would all like to say a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers who work at these charities – they do amazing work helping to rebuild people’s lives.
Mark would have been so proud to see his boys walk out onto the pitch alongside their favourite players. He was the Assistant Manager of the local U9 Riverside Rovers team and seemed to eat, breathe and sleep football at times! He was extremely proud of Paul’s footballing achievements and encouraged him at every opportunity. Mark is sadly missed at the matches now, but no doubt he would be delighted if he was able to see the boys competing well and enjoying the game. Thank you for allowing me to share his memory with you and for allowing our boys the privilege of being mascots for the day.”
The boys came along with Claire and Paul’s best friend Jack to London Road, when they were among eleven mascots for the game in total! After receiving their new kits it was time to visit the dressing room, where the boys got to meet their favourite players and get pictures and autographs with them. After that there was a tour of the rest of the ground, including a visit to the boardroom, where genial host Bob Burrows entertained us.
The boys then had a training session on the pitch with the other mascots before walking out with the teams in full view of the nation just before kick off. Then they took their seats for the match which the visitors won 4-1!
Despite the result we hope they enjoyed their day in memory of Mark.
As always thank you to all at Peterborough United, particularly Simon and Gavin who are the Posh mascot co-ordinators and Sue Ryder for giving us the opportunity to meet Paul and Daniel.
