A cold Friday night in January saw Free Kicks visit Colchester United for the match with Peterborough United. Our guest for the night was 6 year old Tom from Clacton on Sea. Tom has a rare bowel disease which restricts his growth and was nominated to us by Graham Appleton from the Children’s Unit at Colchester General Hospital.
We were wonderfully looked after by the club’s Community Inclusion Manager David Streetley. The evening started with Tom receiving his brand new Colchester United kit, before being taken on a VIP tour of the stadium which included visiting the dressing room to get the player’s autographs. He was particularly keen to meet goalkeeper Ben Williams as, due to his restricted mobility, Tom tends to play in goal too.
After the tour he had a kickabout on the pitch with the other mascots before rejoining his family to watch his team win the game 2-1.
Tom proved to be a bit of a celebrity having been featured in the local paper, on the club’s website and also had a whole page about him in the match programme. Even The U’s manager John Ward knew who he was!
Once again we would like to thank all at Colchester United for their kindness and hospitality and our mystery anonymous donor, whose £50 a month payroll donations funded Tom’s evening out.
