Our second Kick of the Easter weekend was at the Championship game between Millwall and Preston North End.
Will was nominated by Nick Hart from Millwall Fanzine ‘No One Likes Us’ (NOLU). The fanzine is run as a not for profit venture and gives any profit it makes to charity and Millwall FC. This season they have kindly donated £1,450 to Free Kicks Foundation. We decided that because of their generosity we would use some of the money raised to take a deserving Lions fan to The Den and met up with Nick outside the ground to thank him personally for the donations.
Will, who is 9, has a medical condition that has affected him since he was about 3. It affects him every day and has really knocked his confidence in some areas of his life. He is receiving life changing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital who have improved his quality of life immeasurably already and who intend to improve it more.
After meeting Will, his mum Mel and brother Alex outside the players entrance we popped along to the club shop to buy him his new kit, ready for running out on the pitch with his heroes. Then it was time to go through to pitch-side and take in the pre match atmosphere, before heading off to the dressing room to meet the Millwall players and get pictures and autographs in his programme.
There was time for a kick-about with Zampa the Lion on the pitch before kick-off and then came Will’s starring moment…walking out live on TV with the team, before heading off with Mum and Alex to their seats in the Dockers Stand as Millwall emphatically beat Preston 4-0.
We would like to thank everybody at Millwall for their hospitality, they let us in to take pictures even though we weren’t staying for the game ourselves. Special thanks again to the guys at NOLU particularly Nick and Ant for their support this season.
