Upton Park was the venue for Zach’s Kick for the Championship game between West Ham United and Peterborough United.
Zach, from Farnborough, is profoundly deaf and cannot speak, only communicating by sign language. He has had a tough year after going through an operation for a new cochlear implant and a then, just a few weeks later, he caught suspected meningitis. He was nominated by our good friend Victor Schooling, who recently organised the Challenge42 5-a-side world record attempt.
We met up with Zach and his dad Marlon outside the ground before they were taken inside for a tour and to meet up with the players in the dressing room where Zach could get photos of himself with all his heroes. Highlight of the day for Zach was, whilst wearing his new Hammers kit, going out to pitchside to soak up the atmosphere before walking out of the tunnel with captain Kevin Nolan as they led the team out for kick-off. To finish off the day Zach then went back to his seat with his family to watch as West Ham beat Peterborough 1-0 with a Mark Noble penalty.
