In 2009 the Free Kicks Foundation were approached by Atitsgobe Sylvester, who is Executive Director of VARAS, a charity based in Ghana. VARAS work through and by means of provision of local and international volunteer opportunities, aids, donations, and any other acceptable means to make living condition better for people in the rural areas of Ghana.
One of the ways VARAS wanted to improve the lives of the children in the area was by providing them with football kits and organising matches. They asked if we could send over some shirts and shorts and we were delighted to help. Having put a plea out via the Free Kicks facebook page and Peterborough United fans forum londonroad.net, we received a number of shirts. Alex Harris, Commercial manager at Peterborough United, also donated some shorts and match worn shirts.
The shirts finally arrived in Ghana after an epic 7 month journey and it was wonderful to receive some pictures of the children wearing their new shirts and shorts and playing a game of football.
We hope to collect more pieces of kit to send out to Ghana in 2011. If anybody would like to help us by either donating shirts or sponsoring the transportation of the packages, please get in touch!
