One Very Posh Evening to Remember

Peterborough United fans and ex-players came together on May 7th at a joint event raising funds for Free Kicks Foundation and The Tommy Robson Statue Fund.

More than 200 people packed into the room at the Holiday Inn in the city on a night of celebration, humour and memories of Posh teams and play-off wins, all brilliantly hosted by Paul Stainton and Ben Stevenson.

After all of the players, including 1974 Division 4 winner Bert Murray, entered the room to a standing ovation and the sounds of Posh We Are ringing out, the event began with dinner before videos showing the work of The Free Kicks Foundation and a tribute to the legendary Tommy Robson.

Guests also heard from Free Kicks founder Steve Thorpe and chair of the Tommy Robson Statue committee, Adi Mowles, about the importance of the evening and the causes it supported.

The entertainment then began in earnest when Paul and Ben were joined on stage by members of the 1992 Division 3 play-off winning team – Marcus Ebdon, Lee Howarth, Noel Luke, Steve Welsh and Marc Tracey, affectionately known as “Ginge”.

As goals from the famous 2-1 win over Stockport County played on screen, fans were treated to stories from both on and off the pitch from the side that took Posh to Wembley for the very first time.

Next up were eight members of the squad from the 2000 win over Darlington: Steve Castle, Dave Farrell, Matthew Gill, Gareth Jelleyman, Jason Lee, Simon Rea, Richard Scott and Paul Showler.

After reliving Dave Farrell’s hat-trick in the semi-final win over Barnet and the Wembley final victory, the stories continued to flow, including tales of life under Barry Fry and plenty of laughter from that memorable era.

Will we ever find out what happened in Jersey?

The final set of guests represented the unforgettable 2010-11 season and the brilliant play-off win over Huddersfield Town.

George Boyd, Mark Little, Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron McLean, Chris Whelpdale and Gaby Zakuani took to the stage to relive the dramatic semi-final victory over MK Dons and the magic of scoring three goals in seven unforgettable minutes at Old Trafford.

Again, the stories flowed freely as players joked with each other and the room filled with laughter, nostalgia and memories of great Posh moments.

A Team On and Off the Pitch

One thing that shone through across all three generations of teams was togetherness.

Whether it was 34, 26 or 15 years since their success, the affection the players still held for each other, the club and the supporters was clear to see. They were teams in every sense of the word – working hard together on the pitch and enjoying their time together off it too.

Over £16,000 Raised

Over £16,000 Raised

The evening raised more than £16,000 thanks to the incredible support of Posh fans through ticket sales, raffles and auction generosity.

What began as an idea in the summer of 2025 became a truly special occasion, bringing together 18 players from three iconic play-off winning teams for one unforgettable evening.

Special thanks go to the organising committee, all of the players who travelled from across the country in their own time, the staff at the Holiday Inn, hosts Paul Stainton and Ben Stevenson, Chris Pallister for overseeing sound and vision, and Joe Fletcher, Phil Adlam, Chris Brewer and Gavin Stanley from Posh for their support.

And finally, thank you to everybody who attended the evening and donated so generously to two fantastic causes.
